Yu Kurosaki 黒崎 優
Yu Kurosaki is one of Japan’s most recognised and celebrated modern knife makers, known for combining traditional Echizen craftsmanship with his own highly distinctive artistic style. Working from Takefu Knife Village, he began his knife making career in 2002 after apprenticing under the legendary Hiroshi Kato. Despite not considering himself naturally gifted at the beginning of his journey, Kurosaki’s dedication and perseverance allowed him to develop into one of the most respected blacksmiths of his generation.
Kurosaki is known for his unique approach to traditional Japanese forging, creating knives that combine exceptional performance with striking visual design. His signature Tsuchime (hammered) finishes are instantly recognisable, often inspired by natural elements such as rain, wind, and lightning. Each blade reflects his creativity while still respecting the centuries-old techniques of Echizen knife making, resulting in knives that are both highly functional tools and works of art.
Kurosaki works with a range of premium steels, including R2/SG2 Steel, VG10 Steel, and traditional carbon steel such as Aogami Super Steel. His knives are admired worldwide for their sharpness, edge retention, durability, and beautiful finishes. In 2019, Kurosaki was awarded the prestigious DentoKogeshi certification, one of the highest honours recognising outstanding traditional craftsmanship in Japan.
