Yoshimi Kato is a highly skilled Japanese blacksmith based in Takefu Knife Village, located in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, a region with over 700 years of blade-making history. Yoshimi Kato continues the legacy of his father-in-law, the legendary Hiroshi Kato, a master blacksmith who played a pivotal role in promoting the Takefu Knife Village cooperative and its artisans.

Yoshimi Kato apprenticed under Hiroshi Kato, learning the traditional forging techniques that make Echizen blades so revered. With decades of experience, he has refined his craft to produce knives that balance traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern performance.

When Hiroshi Kato retired, Yoshimi Kato took over the family workshop and continued producing knives under the same high standards. He maintains a deep respect for the traditions of Japanese knife-making while embracing modern materials like R2/SG2 powdered steel, VG10, and other high-performance stainless steels.

Kato is an integral member of the Takefu Knife Village, a cooperative of master blacksmiths dedicated to preserving and innovating the ancient blade-making techniques of the Echizen region. This cooperative ensures the survival of traditional skills while fostering the production of world-class Japanese knives.

Yoshimi Kato is known for crafting knives under his own name and for working with brands such as Masakage and Kurosaki Knives. His blades are celebrated for their exceptional sharpness, durability, and elegant designs, often featuring intricate Damascus finishes or hammered patterns.

Kato blends traditional forging techniques with modern metallurgy to produce knives that are both functional and artistic. His philosophy centres on creating tools that bring joy to chefs and elevate their cooking experience.
