Kenji Togashi is a distinguished blacksmith from Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, with a career spanning nearly five decades. He began his journey in bladesmithing in 1967 and has since become renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship. In 1996, Togashi was officially recognised as a “Dentoukougeishi” (Traditional Craftsman), a testament to his dedication and skill in traditional Japanese knife-making.
Togashi specialises in the traditional Japanese forging technique known as Honyaki, which involves crafting knives from a single piece of high-carbon steel. This method is highly challenging and requires a high level of expertise, resulting in blades that are both hard and sharp, often featuring a distinctive hamon (temper line).
His workshop in Sakai is a family endeavour, with his three sons contributing to the craft. Togashi’s knives are characterised by their durability and hardness, yet they remain easy to sharpen—a balance that speaks to his mastery of the craft. He produces blades primarily for the Sakai Takayuki brand, among others.
Throughout his career, Togashi has received numerous accolades, including a medal from the Emperor of Japan for his accomplishments and service—one of the most honourable and prestigious decorations in the country. His work is widely considered to be some of the best in Japan, extending across many types of knives.
