Yauji Yoshihiro 弥氏 良寛
Yoshihiro Yauji developed his passion for knife making from a childhood fascination with tools and working with steel. Born in 1983, Yauji-san was drawn to DIY and gradually discovered a deep connection with handcrafted blades. He describes knives as “the starting point of mankind,” reflecting on how early humans used cutting tools from the Stone Age to shape the development of civilisation. This appreciation for the importance and history of knives became the foundation of his journey as a craftsman.
In 2003, Yauji-san began his apprenticeship under Hideo Kitaoka, one of Japan’s most respected traditional knife artisans. After more than 15 years of intense training, he began producing knives independently in 2019. Unlike many modern makers who specialise in only one stage of production, Yauji-san personally carries out every step of the process himself including forging, grinding, finishing, and sharpening allowing complete control over the quality and character of each blade.
His knives represent a deep respect for traditional Japanese craftsmanship, combining generations of knowledge with his own dedication and creativity. Working with premium steels such as White #2 Steel and other high-quality carbon steels, Yauji creates blades known for their exceptional sharpness, refined geometry, and beautiful handmade finishes. Each knife reflects his belief that a blade is not simply a tool, but a piece of history and a continuation of Japan’s long tradition of craftsmanship.
